AWOL Vision LTV projector: review, prices

AWOL Vision previously sent our shopping editors a review unit. During our hands-on testing of the LTV-3500 Pro UST (ultra short throw) projector, to say we were impressed is an absolute understatement.

Be it streaming visually stunning movies like The Lord of the Rings AND Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness in a pitch black environment or playing video games such as Minecraft, Mario Kart OR Forza Horizon 5 with ambient light during the day, we were blown away by the truly cinematic experience on our 100-inch screen. It can project from 80 to 150 inches in screen size and boasts Dolby Vision technology, a brightness level of 3500 ANSI lumens, HDR10+ and over a billion colors for maximum contrast, vibrancy and precision. (The company points out that its device is the only UST RGB projector on the market with Dolby Vision and Atmos, HDR 10+ and Active 3D.)

It delivers the original 24 fps without adding extra frames, allowing you to watch movies exactly as the filmmakers intended. Gamers, meanwhile, enjoy a screen lag time of just 8ms in 1080p, an impressive number considering the enormous image size. Dolby Atmos surround sound and the included Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K Max (reg. $60) make streaming content with great sound as easy as plug and play.

The ultra short throw projector only needs to be placed about seven inches away from the wall, so it's great for those who don't want to mount anything on the ceiling or walls.

The projector includes a pair of 3D glasses, but we have yet to use them given the lack of general availability and variety of quality 3D movies for home streaming.

AWOL Vision LTV projector: how to choose the right model

AWOL Vision offers three models of ultra-short throw triple laser projectors that all support Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos. The difference between them is the brightness level in lumens (or the amount of light emitted by a bulb), indicated in the model name. The general rule: a brighter projector will give you better quality and finer detail, but it depends on the size of the room and the amount of ambient light coming in.

According to AWOL Vision, the LTV-2500, LTV-3000 and LTV-3500 projectors achieve 147% DCI-P3, which is the RGB color space used in digital cinema projection. If you want to delve even deeper into industry standards, you can also consider foot-lambert (ftL), which is the measurement of screen luminance for a one-foot-by-one-foot area of ​​the screen. To calculate ftL, take the projector's lumens and divide them by the square footage of the screen area, then multiply them by the screen gain. (For reference, 16ftL is recommended by the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers for pitch-black commercial movie theaters.)

Assuming you're using AWOL Vision screens (which have a gain of 1.3), the LTV-2500 projector paired with a 100-inch screen is nearly 107 ftL, while the LTV-3500 Pro with a 150-inch screen it is just under 62 ftL. Even if you use the brand's introductory model, you'll be well outside the recommended range for screen brightness.

AWOL Vision LTV projector: how to choose the right screen

While you can project onto any flat, white wall, we recommend pairing the LTV-2500 projector with one of AWOL Vision's matte white screens (available in 100-, 120-, or 135-inch sizes), which offers a seamless viewing experience that absorbs only the light from the projector, ensuring up to 80% better image quality. We tested the projector on a blank, white wall, but found that even the slightest surface texture was a distraction, and ultimately installed the 100-inch screen.

For rooms where you don't have to worry about daylight, the Cinematic screen is ideal and resists up to 95% of ceiling light.

If you want the crème de la crème of AWOL ALR (Ambient Light Rejecting) screens, go for Cinematic+, which is a motorized screen that rises from the floor and resists up to 95% of ceiling light.
