Bill Maher comes to the defense of Cheryl Hines, who continues to face criticism for her husband Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s decision to endorse Donald Trump for president.
As the comedian made it clear in the latest episode of the HBO series Real time that she “couldn’t support” RFK Jr.’s campaign for the White House, attacked those who criticized Hines on social media for supporting her husband.
“His wife is Cheryl Hines, who Larry David described as 'the greatest person he's ever met, the only person in Hollywood who doesn't have a single enemy,'” Maher said. “Well, she does now … because she didn't throw her husband under the bus when he made a decision about something that he clearly said he didn't agree with.”
Hines noted that she is not a supporter of Trump or his third presidential bid, with RFK Jr. saying TMZ News last month that his wife is “a lifelong Democrat.”
Maher went on to call out “the above mentioned hateful far-left posers,” for recent hate-filled tweets directed at Curb your enthusiasm actress. Among them, actor Bradley Whitford's comment on X (formerly Twitter), in which he called out Hines for remaining silent while this all unfolded. “Way to remain silent while your lunatic husband supports a self-confessed rapist who brags about depriving women of their basic rights,” Whitford wrote in his post.
“Well, you know what I think is not brave? Explaining yourself as a man to a woman, but obviously not to her face, about how she should sacrifice her marriage, all this so she can read something on Twitter that you approve of,” Maher responded. “You want to know why I'm so pissed off about the left now? It's bullshit like that. There's an ugliness in it that they never had. The liberals I grew up respecting, none of them were like that. Going after the wife, not even the mafia does that.”
The host added: “In theory, liberals are compassionate. In practice, this guy can't even understand one of the most basic dilemmas common to all human beings: When you're married, sometimes you have to swallow a little shit.”
In August, RFK Jr. suspended his presidential campaign and endorsed GOP nominee Trump and his running mate J.D. Vance.
