Bill Maher Is Surprised By Taylor Swift's Influence On 2024 Election

Bill Maher finally got to the “big news this week” in the latest episode of HBO Real time — Taylor Swift's endorsement of Kamala Harris.

The host appeared surprised by the pop superstar’s influence on the 2024 presidential election, as it was previously reported that her support had driven more than 400,000 people to Vote.gov, a voter registration resource that directs people to local state election websites.

“Taylor Swift finally told people who to vote for,” Maher said. “Of course, the immediate response from the other side was, 'Celebrity endorsements don't matter.' People are always so behind on these things, you know. That's been the conventional wisdom for a long time, a lot of celebrity endorsements don't work… not in this case, I mean, just the number of people who were immediately signed up by that tweet.”

The comedian continued, “And I'm sorry, but we live in Starfucker, America. George Clooney is the guy who got Biden to resign. I wrote the exact same op-ed he wrote, and so did so many other people. Nobody cared. As soon as George Clooney said that, he had to go.”

Maher then sought to understand a “surprising” statistic regarding the demographics of Swift's fanbase, according to a May survey conducted by Redfield & Wilton Strategies for Weekly news.

“That was the most surprising part, who it influenced,” he said. “Swift, he says, would have more influence on male voters: 27 percent of male voters said they would be more likely to vote for a candidate Swift supported. I must have misjudged that. I thought it would be women.”

Following this week’s presidential debate between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris, Swift took to social media to give the vice president her influential endorsement.

“I will vote for [Kamala Harris] because she fights for rights and causes that I believe need a warrior to champion them,” the Grammy-winning singer wrote in part. “I think she is a gifted and steady leader and I believe we could accomplish so much more in this country if we were led by calm and not chaos. I was so encouraged and touched by her choice of running mate [Tim Walz]who has been fighting for LGBTQ+ rights, in vitro fertilization and women's right to their own bodies for decades.”

Friday's episode of Real time special guests Alex Karp, Kristen Soltis Anderson and Al Franken.
