Charlie Hunnam to Play Ed Gein in Ryan Murphy's 'Monster' Season 3

Ryan Murphy has found his next Monster in Ed Gein… and Charlie Hunnam. The Sons of Anarchy The star will play the serial killer and body snatcher, often referred to as “the Butcher of Plainfield,” in the third season of the Netflix anthology series Monster.

Murphy announced the casting, as well as plans to begin production next month, ahead of Monday's screening of the series' latest effort — Monsters: The Story of Lyle and Erik Menendez. Each cycle of the Monster franchise is looking to tackle a different kind of crime story after the huge success of its 2022 debut about serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer. That series still ranks as the third most-watched English-language Netflix original series of all time. Season 2 shifts focus to the infamous Menendez brothers, who were convicted of murdering their parents in 1989, with the case becoming a media sensation in the 1990s when it went to trial.

Moreover Monster comes after Murphy ended his deal with Netflix in 2023 following a string of blockbuster hits. While the prolific producer is now based at The Walt Disney Company, he continues to work on his existing projects at Netflix, including writing the season two opener of The Story of Lyle and Erik Menendez with fellow showrunner and executive producer Ian Brennan.

No other casting was announced Monday, but Hunnam's addition comes months after the actor landed a starring role in another series. He's also set to play the lead in Amazon Criminal.

As for the second season of monstersAll nine episodes will be available on Netflix on September 19.
