Christopher Reeve as Superman in a wheelchair proves to be nothing less than a hero in the trailer for the documentary from DC Studios and Fathom Events Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Storypublished on Monday.
“I think a hero is an ordinary individual who finds the strength to persevere and endure despite insurmountable odds,” Reeve, who died in 2004 at age 52, says at one point in the teaser for the film about the iconic Hollywood star who played the Man of Steel in four films. Superman film series, before a near-fatal horseback riding accident in 1995 left him paralyzed from the neck down.
Despite becoming a quadriplegic, the documentary shows how Reeve overcame initial doubts about his ability to continue living and, supported by the strength of his family and friends, dedicated his life to finding a cure for spinal cord injuries and advocating for the rights and care of disabled people.
Directed by Ian Bonhôte and Peter Ettedgui, who directed McQueenThe film about Reeve's personal and Hollywood history includes home footage and interviews with Reeve's three sons and Hollywood colleagues and friends.
“My dad was very competitive and never stopped,” said daughter Alexandra Reeve in tribute to her father.
The film, which DC Studios, HBO Documentary Films and CNN Films acquired from this year's Sundance Film Festival, will open in U.S. theaters on September 21, 2024. A rerun presentation will follow on September 25, Superman actor's birthday.
Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story is produced by Passion Pictures and Misfits Entertainment, with Words + Pictures also serving as financier and producer.
The film will be released internationally in theaters.
