CNN's Van Jones calls Donald Trump's victory a terrifying 'nightmare'

CNN's Van Jones had a dark and deeply concerned reaction when he realized that Donald Trump was on the verge of defeating Kamala Harris and regaining the presidency.

The cable news commentator was live on the network's election coverage panel Tuesday night as he described Trump's return to power as a “nightmare” and showed particular empathy for the Black women who supported Harris, along with immigrants and trans youth .

“I'm thinking of the people who are not part of anyone's elite who are suffering tonight,” Jones said. “There are African American women who know a little bit about being treated with contempt, and know a little bit about having their economic dreams dashed, who have been trying to dream a big dream for the last couple of months. And tonight they trade a lot of hope for a lot of pain. And they hoped that maybe this time one of them could be considered worthy. And once again they are faced with rejection, and that hurts. They thought they would walk out tomorrow morning with their shoulders back a little, maybe able to breathe for the first time and feel like they belonged somewhere. They did everything they knew how to do and tomorrow it will be harder than expected for them to keep their heads up.”

Jones continues: “And they're not the only people suffering tonight. If you're trans, if you're the parent of a trans child, your child's face has been used as a springboard for someone's power, and that doesn't make you feel good. There will be people tomorrow; we will deliver the clothes [to immigrants at] dry cleaners without documents. There will be people brushing your teeth tomorrow who don't have documents and will be terrified tonight. So it's easy to dismiss it: “Oh, look at the elite, they're going to get their comeuppance.” The elites will not pay the price. They are the people who woke up this morning with a dream and are going to bed with a nightmare, and those people deserve to be respected, supported and talked to. These are the people who will pay the price, whatever Donald Trump decides to do.”

The rest of the CNN panel remained respectfully silent during Jones' comments.

The comments come as Hollywood celebrities are also reacting to Trump's victory. Don't look up Director Adam McKay writes: “Who would have imagined lying about Biden's cognitive health for 2 years, refusing to do an open convention for a new candidate, never mentioning public healthcare, and embracing fracking, the Cheneys and a year of massacre of children in Gaza could not have been a winning strategy? Anyone with half a brain. But I thought liberals were all about being smart? Isn't it? In reality they just blindly applaud the parade of shaky optics in which it is enclosed New York Times font that is the modern Dem Party? Well, at least it's time for the dusty hacks and careerists to spread their feathers after the election and blame Russia and third-party candidates. This should fix things.

While you're on The daily showThe election night special, a visibly frustrated Jon Stewart ended with a message of hope and reassurance: “I promise you, this is not the end.”

Harris is expected to give her concession speech later Wednesday from her alma mater, Howard University.
