Néstor Carbonell and Michaela Coel were named Outstanding Guest Actor and Outstanding Guest Actress in the second night of the 2024 Creative Arts Emmys on Sunday night. Carbonell was honored for his role as Rodrigues on the FX series Shogun and Coel for playing Bev on Prime Video Mr. and Mrs. Smith.
Emmy nominee Jamie Lee Curtis presented the award for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy to Carbonell, whose other nominees included Paul Dano (Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Prime Video), Tracy Letts (Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers DynastyHBO/Max), Jonathan Pryce (Slow horses, Apple TV+) and John Turturro (Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Prime Video). Carbonell began his acceptance speech by thanking his wife.
“I want to thank Shannon,” Carbonell said. “My wife is here. Shannon is an actress who has worked in this industry for 25 years, in film, television and theater. And when our second child was born, she stepped away from this industry to pursue full-time motherhood so I could pursue what I love to do. So I'm sharing that with you, honey.”
Carbonell said The Hollywood Reporter in a previous interview what the role of Rodrigues meant to him. “Being a part of this amazing show, the whole experience was amazing, from start to finish. It's not often, as an actor, you get to play someone who is so far away from you in so many ways; physically, I had the opportunity to grow this horrible beard and gain weight, and then learn a Castilian accent,” he shared. “Usually when I work on a project, I end up hiring my own dialect coach because it's not budgeted for, but it was on Shogun. They really spared no expense when it came to every detail.”
Coel, who was not present at the ceremony, was nominated for Best Guest Actress alongside Claire Foy (The crown, Netflix), Marcia Gay Harden (The morning show, Apple TV+), Sarah Paulson (Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Prime Video) and Parker Posey (Mr. and Mrs. Smith, (Prime Video).
