Mara Hoffman may have shuttered her namesake label in May, but her best-selling pieces will live on thanks to a new partnership with Vestiaire Collective.
The New York-based designer teamed up with the designer fashion resale platform for an archive sale featuring over 90 pieces from past collections, including looks seen on stars. Red carpet-ready highlights include the famous popcorn minidress worn by Beyoncé and countless others, the Namari dress (seen on Mindy Kaling), the Mona dress (seen on Chrissy Teigen), the Leonara dress (seen on Nicola Coughlan), the cult-favorite Sloane dress and many more. “This partnership is an easy way to bring life and longevity to the Mara Hoffman brand,” the designer says in a statement. “The ethics and commitments of our respective companies have always been aligned, and we found this partnership to be an opportunity to celebrate and support each other. I'm proud to expand the brand's availability to a broader customer base and ensure these timeless pieces remain around.”
Hoffman founded his brand in 1999 as a swimwear and resortwear line; 10 years ago, it phased out polyester and other synthetic fabrics, restructured its production chain and began offering Fair Trade certified garments made with Tencel made from wood pulp and other sustainable materials.
Hoffman earlier this year announced he would be shutting down his eco-conscious label after “a wonderful 24-year run,” he wrote on Instagram on May 19. working in an industry that I believe deep down wants to heal and improve. But ultimately, its structure is archaic and was never built to prioritize the Earth and its inhabitants.”
He continued: “Our Spring 2024 collection will be our last offering for now, allowing me the space to reset and redirect my vision and energy towards other creative outlets. … It has been an honor to take on a position of responsibility, to become an example of change in this industry and to show the potential of new, more loving, Earth-centered and kinder systems. … Anyone in this industry, particularly within the sustainability movement, is aware that it has been far from easy on so many levels.”
Hoffman toasted his partnership with the B Corp. online marketplace with Samina Virk, CEO of Vestiaire Collective for the United States, during a Climate Week event on September 24.
