Even before the Emmys began on Sunday, there was little doubt which media conglomerate would end the night with the most awards. Led by 14 Creative Arts wins for ShogunDisney had a virtually insurmountable lead in terms of awards won.
The only question was how much the Mouse House would increase the score. The answer: quite a bit.
Led by Shogun AND The bear — which won four awards each at Sunday’s awards ceremony and set records for wins by a drama (18) and a comedy (11) in a single year — FX-produced programming led all platforms with 36 wins at the 76th Emmy Awards. FX alone would have edged Disney out of first place among media conglomerates, but the company also took home 24 other awards for a record total of 60.
Netflix came in second with a total of 24 wins at Sunday’s ceremony and last week’s Creative Arts awards, two more than at the 75th Emmys. HBO/Max took home 14 Emmys, the lowest total for Warner Bros. Discovery outlets (which are competing as a single entity for the Emmys) in more than a quarter century (HBO had 14 wins in 1998, well before the streaming era began). Two other companies, Apple and NBCUniversal, also hit double digits.
While Shogun AND The bear did the bulk of the work for Disney, many other programs also won numerous awards: the Disney+ documentary Jim Henson: The Man of Ideas won five Emmys, the Oscar telecast scored four wins, and Hulu's Only murders in the building and the special effects Welcome to Wrexham had three each. The Hulu comedy How I Met Your FatherCancelled after its second season, it won two awards, for multi-camera photography and image editing.
HBO and Max had some bright spots on Sunday, including three wins for Max Tricks (Best Comedy Series, Writing for a Comedy and Lead Actress Jean Smart). Last Week Tonight with John Oliver won two Emmys and Alex Edelman: Just for us took home the award for Best Writing for a Variety Special (and hosted one of Sunday’s most heartfelt acceptance speeches, in which Edelman paid tribute to the live show’s director, Adam Brace, who passed away in 2023).
HBO/Max's down year is likely more a question of timing and inventory depletion following the strikes. Succession had its last Emmy run a year ago, and shows like The Last of Us AND The White Lotus did not air new episodes this Emmy year after winning 13 awards, just one less than the entire HBO/Max total this year, in 2023. Both shows are likely to debut in time to be considered for the 2025 Emmys, as well House of the Dragon (an Emmy for its first season).
This is the future. In the present, the 2024 Emmys belonged to Disney, specifically FX. Here’s a breakdown of wins by network, media company, and program.
