If Sunday night feels like “Emmys, the Sequel,” that’s understandable: In January, several months later than usual, the television industry met to present the 2023 awards, a delay necessitated by last year’s twin Writers Guild and SAG-AFTRA strikes. But what a difference eight months could make for the 2024 Emmys.
While long-time favorites and past winners such as The bearby Jeremy Allen White, Abbott Elementary SchoolQuinta Brunson and The crownElizabeth Debicki is back in the running for trophies, and first-time nominees are also expected to attend the ceremony at the Peacock Theater in downtown Los Angeles, including Ryan Gosling, nominated for his guest hosting duties in Saturday night liveand Naomi Watts, who earned her first Emmy nomination for her role as Babe Paley on the FX series Feud: Capote vs. Swans.
ShogunMeanwhile, it has already nabbed 14 trophies from its record-breaking 25 Emmy nominations at the Creative Arts Emmys, handed out on September 7 and 8. During its primetime run on ABC, the epic period drama will also compete for Outstanding Drama Series, while the show's stars Anna Sawai and Hiroyuki Sanada have also been nominated in their respective acting categories (read the predictions for The Hollywood Reportermajor television critics here).
