This is not your father's Traumnovel.
Florian Frerichs' new adaptation of Arthur Schnitzler's famous erotic tale, the work that inspired Stanley Kubrick Eyes tightly closed — promises to be a much more explicit version of the story. The trailer for the film, which opens this year's Oldenburg Film Festival on September 11, is full of hot and heavy stuff (see below).
Nicholas Kinski (Barbarians) and Laurine Price (Phoenix) stars a respectable upper-middle-class couple living in Berlin who are drawn into a secret and dangerous world of erotic fantasy. Detlev Buck, Bruno Eyron and Nora Islei co-star, with cameos by Sharon Brauner and Sharon Kovacs. Produced by Warnuts Entertainment and Studio Babelsberg.
by Frerich Traumnovel follows many of the plot points as Kubrick's adaptation. After his wife, Amelia (Price), confesses to having sexual fantasies about another man, Jakob (Kinski), a doctor to the town's rich and famous, becomes intrigued by a secret sex “ball” attended by some of the town's most prominent citizens. Disguising himself in a cloak and mask, he manages to sneak in, despite warnings that attending could destroy his life.
Originally published in 1926, Schnitzler Traumnovel has been adapted for the screen several times, most famously as Kubrick's 1999 feature film starring Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman. The production shot for a record 400 days. Shortly after completing the film, and only six days after screening his cut for Kidman and Cruise, Kubrick died.
Frerichs and his cast will be present Traumnovel world premiere in Oldenburg on September 11. The film will hit German theaters in early 2025 courtesy of Apollo Film.
The Oldenburg Festival is Germany's leading independent film festival and is known for celebrating films that are provocative, quirky or otherwise outside of mainstream cinema. The 31st Oldenburg Film Festival takes place from September 11th to 15th.
