George Clooney praised President Joe Biden for stepping down as the Democratic presidential nominee to make way for Kamala Harris, describing the move as “the most selfless thing anyone's done since George Washington.”
The star spoke to co-star Brad Pitt for Jon Watts Wolvespremiering Sunday at the Venice Film Festival.
When asked about his recent opinion piece for The New York Times Titled “I Love Joe Biden, But We Need a New Candidate,” published July 10, Clooney took the opportunity to praise the 81-year-old. “The person who should be applauded is the president who has done the most selfless thing that anyone has done since George Washington,” Clooney said at the conference.
“All the machinations that got us to this point, none of that will be remembered, and it shouldn't be,” he continued. “What should be remembered is the selfless act of someone who did the hardest thing to do. You know we've seen it all over the world, and if someone says, I think there's a better way forward, all the credit goes to them, and that's really the truth.”
Clooney and Pitt brought their dueling charisma to the festival for the world premiere of Watt's action comedy, in which they play competing criminal fixers accidentally assigned to the same job. The two movie stars and real-life friends traded friendly barbs, praise and cinematic insights in Italy during a press conference for Wolfs held ahead of its world premiere.
Pitt and Clooney star together in the action comedy as professional fixers who are hired to cover up the same high-profile crime, forcing the two “lone wolves” to work together and, before long, find their night spiraling out of control in ways neither could have expected.
Just days before the two movie stars landed in Venice, news emerged that Watts has a deal with Apple to write and direct a film. Wolves sequel. It is unclear whether Clooney and Pitt have already signed on for the sequel.
Wolfs will launch on Apple TV+ on September 27, following its limited theatrical release on September 20 via Sony.
