Someone somewhere is retreating.
The critically acclaimed, Peabody Award-winning HBO dramedy will conclude its third season. The final season is scheduled to premiere on October 27.
HBO has picked up a third season of the series in June 2023. Filming began shortly after the end of last year’s SAG-AFTRA strike (the scripts had been completed before the writers’ strike), making it one of the first productions to restart after the writers and actors secured new contracts.
Created by Hannah Bos and Paul Thureen and starring Bridget Everett (who also serves as writer and executive producer), Someone somewhere centers on Sam (Everett), who returns to his Kansas hometown and ultimately finds his people in a community of outsiders “who don’t fit in but don’t give up,” as the series synopsis puts it.
“It has been the biggest dream to bring this world to life, and to do so with HBO,” Bos, Thureen, Everett and executive producer Carolyn Strauss said in a statement. “Love and thanks to the size of Kansas Prairie to Amy [Gravitt]the entire HBO family and the most talented and caring cast and crew. The heart of Someone somewhere It's friendship, and we will always cherish the friendships on screen and those forged behind the camera.”
Added Gravitt, executive vice president of HBO programming and head of comedy series for HBO and Max: “We are incredibly proud to have collaborated with Bridget, Hannah and Paul on this extraordinary exploration of the beauty of everyday life. While it's difficult to say goodbye to these characters we care about, we are grateful for this journey and the legacy. Someone somewhere leaves behind.”
Someone somewhere is set in and around Manhattan, Kansas, Everett's hometown, which honored the actress with a “Bridget Everett Day” in 2023. She said The Hollywood Reporter that the locals thanked her, Bos and Thureen for taking the time to portray small-town life as it really is.
“I was in Manhattan, Kansas, and we were out at Old Chicago, it was the only place we could get a table that night, and at different times someone who runs queer studies at Kansas State and the basketball coach came up to me and said they liked the show,” Everett said. “I found it very satisfying that people from such different walks of life could see themselves in the show and respond well. You don’t want your hometown to turn on you and think you’re a big turkey.”
The series also stars Jeff Hiller, Mary Catherine Garrison, Tim Bagley, Murray Hill, Jennifer Mudge, Mercedes White, and Meighan Gerachis. Ólafur Darri Ólafsson joined the cast for the final season.
Bos, Thureen, Everett and Strauss (via his Mighty Mint banner) are executive producers Someone somewhere starring Jay Duplass, Mark Duplass and Mel Eslyn of Duplass Brothers Productions and Tyler Romary. Shuli Harel produces. Season 3 writers Bos and Thureen, Everett, Lisa Kron and Lennon Parham; Jay Duplass, Robert Cohen and Parham direct.
