Hiroyuki Sanada, star and producer of ShogunIt previews a bit the second season of the hit series.
The actor was asked to The Hollywood Reporter and SAG-AFTRA's star-studded Emmy Nominees Night on Friday if the next season could potentially film in Japan. The first season was filmed in Canada due to COVID-19.
“We are finding the possibilities, obviously,” he revealed. “Not everything, but maybe some of it. [the show].”
In an interview with DAY Last month, Sanada said Vancouver was a “perfect place for Shogun” as it is a convincing substitute for pre-modern Japan.
“They have a big studio and within a 20-minute drive of the studio they have a forest, a river, a harbor, everything, with no modern buildings or wires or cables,” the actor added at the time. “In Japan, it's so hard to find things like that. Modern things are everywhere.”
In May, FX and Hulu announced they were developing two more seasons of the drama series, based on the 1975 novel of the same name by author James Clavell. Shogun It later earned 25 Emmy nominations, including Best Drama Series, leading the pack for this year's awards ceremony on Sunday. Sanada also received a nod for Best Drama Actor for his role as Lord Yoshii Toranaga.
At Friday's event, Sanada was also asked if audiences could still expect to see Anna Sawai reprise her role as Toda Mariko in the next season, as her character sacrificed her life for Lord Yoshii Toranaga in Shogunthe ninth episode of, “Crimson Sky”. When DAY pitched the idea of Sawai returning as a ghost or in a flashback, Sanada wryly responded, “Or twins?”
“I have no idea,” the actor admitted. “Only she could do that role, so no one can do it that way. I'm so proud of her and then I hope we can work together again, but who knows.”
