Italy Backs WWII Drama 'Vermiglio' For 2025 Oscars

Italy to send Maura Delpero's WWII drama Vermilion in the race for the 2025 Oscars for Best Foreign Language Film.

Vermiglio premiered at the Venice Film Festival last month, where it won the Silver Lion Grand Jury Prize. Sideshow and Janus Films acquired domestic rights to the film shortly after its North American premiere in Toronto.

Set in 1944 in the eponymous village of Vermiglio, high in the Italian Alps, the film follows a local family whose lives are turned upside down by the arrival of a soldier who has taken refuge from the distant conflict. As the world emerges from the tragedy and destruction of World War II, the Vermiglio family faces its own crisis. The ensemble cast includes Tommaso Ragno, Giuseppe De Domenico, Roberta Rovelli, Martina Scrinzi, Orietta Notari and Carlotta Gamba

A sequel to Delpero's acclaimed 2019 directorial debut Maternal, Vermilion is loosely based on the director's family history. She produced the feature film with Carole Baraton, Pauline Boucheny Pinon, Jacques-Henry Bronckart and Tatiana Kozar. Vermilion is a co-production of Cinedora with RAI Cinema and co-produced by Charades Production and Versus Production, with the participation of Anonymous Content.

Italy is the most successful country at the Oscars, with 14 trophies for best international feature film out of 33 nominations (France is second with 12 wins out of 41 nominations). The last Italian feature film to win the award was Paolo Sorrentino The great beauty in 2013.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will announce the films shortlisted for the 2025 Oscars on December 17. Nominations will be announced on January 17, 2025. The 97th Academy Awards will be held on Sunday, March 2.
