James Cameron to Direct 'Ghosts of Hiroshima' After 'Avatar' Sequels

James Cameron is planning his life after The AvatarThe director has bought the rights to the upcoming book Ghosts of Hiroshimaand intends to direct a film adaptation of the story of the atomic bomb, The Hollywood Reporter he confirmed.

Author Charles Pellegrino Ghosts of Hiroshima arrives from Blackstone Publishing in August 2025 and follows his 2015 book Last train from Hiroshimawhich will also serve as the basis for the film.

Cameron's film would have followed in part the true story of engineer Tsutomu Yamaguchi, then 29, credited as the only person to survive both atomic bombs dropped on Japan during World War II. He was in Hiroshima on business on August 6, when the U.S. military bombed the city, and returned by train to Nagasaki the next day, only to survive the bombing on August 9. An estimated 110,000 to 210,000 people died as a result of the bombing.

Cameron is the greatest director in the world, known for the Terminator franchising and Aliensand for directing three of the four greatest films of all time: The Avatar, Avatar: The Way of Water AND TitanicThe feature would mark his first non-The Avatar movies from 1997 Titanic.

He is deeply immersed Avatar: Fire and Ashwhich will arrive in December 2025 and will have two more The Avatar film in the pipeline, although he has stated that he might step aside from directing (although the news is not definitive).

Story Factory's Shane Salerno represents Pellegrino and also has a close relationship with Cameron, as co-writer of the The Avatar sequel. Cameron is repped by CAA and Greenberg Glusker.
