Joan Vassos doesn’t need her Golden Bachelorette role to end with an engagement.
In an interview with People magazine before the Golden Bachelor In the spinoff's premiere, Vassos noted, “I've always said I didn't need to go out in a relationship.” Instead, her goal was to “go out in a committed relationship.”
“I wanted to have someone that I could see a future with and that we wanted to see how it works in the real world outside of the Bachelor bubble,” she explained. “I didn’t want to go through all that and end up in the same place that I was when I got to the mansion.”
After Golden Bachelor Gerry Turner's marriage ended in divorce over disagreements with ex-wife Theresa Nist over where to move, Vassos has maintained from the start that leaving his Maryland home is non-negotiable.
“I would never want to leave my family,” she confirmed. “My children and grandchildren all live very close to me and not being around them all the time would not work for me. They are the most important people in my life. I thought that whoever I was a good partner for would have the same family values that I have and would not want to leave their family.”
That doesn't mean she's ruling out a long-distance relationship. “I was thinking, depending on your work situation, you could go spend two weeks at their house and two weeks at your house, or have another place where you all get together and maybe your families come over,” Vassos said. “You think about it for a while until you find a permanent arrangement, and that could take years, in theory.”
Vassos also confirmed that after the period in which he fought for Turner's heart The Golden Bachelorshe hasn't tried dating anyone. This is partly because she was asked to be the Golden Hen Party shortly after her split from Turner on the show. “I put out a video at the beginning of the year and I said my New Year’s resolutions, and one of them was to get back out there and start dating,” she said. “And then I got a call right after that saying they were considering me as a potential Golden Bachelorette, and what if I was interested? So I definitely haven’t dated.”
The Golden Bachelorette will debut on ABC on Wednesday, September 18.
