“It's been scary at times, but it's also been liberating,” Jonas said of his latest solo project, which he completed mostly in two and a half weeks. “I'm not trying to come for anyone on this album. I'm not trying to hush things up. I have a beautiful life that I'm grateful for. I have two beautiful children. I'm a happy person, and the music had to be that way, but also the journey to get here.”
Jonas, who also makes up one-third of the Jonas Brothers, has seen a lot of changes in his personal life over the past year, especially after his very public divorce from game of Thrones alumna Sophie Turner in 2023. They share two daughters.
“I was going through a lot of life changes,” he explained, “discovering who I was as a person and a father and a friend, and living under the microscope of what the music industry can be. And I think, in such a crazy time in my life, I looked to music as an outlet.”
Jonas said Billboard that the new album actually started with the track “Only Love,” however, it was initially created with his brothers, Nick and Kevin Jonas. But during the writing process, he realized that he connected with this particular song on a personal level.
“I noticed that the song was going in the direction of some personal things that I’ve been going through,” he recalled. “So I went to Kevin and Nick, ‘Hey, can I use this as a catapult to go explore what this sound could be, and also what I’m trying to figure out emotionally?’ They were really supportive — Nick was like, ‘Well, man, I really like that song. But I understand what you have to do, so go for it.’”
Music for people who believe in love will be released by Republic Records on October 18th.
Jonas added about the upcoming album: “Ultimately, if this work helps people deal with what they're going through, that's all I can ask for.”
