Joy Woods to Play Louise in Broadway Revival of gypsy this fall.
Woods will star alongside Jordan Tyson, who will play June, as the two daughters that Mama Rose, played by Audra McDonald, wants to turn into stars. They will be joined in the cast by Danny Burstein as Herbie, the manager of two daughters, and Lesli Margherita as Tessie Tura, Lili Thomas like Miss Mazeppa and Mylinda Hull like Miss Electra.
The revival of the musical, which features music by Jule Styne and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, is directed by George C. Wolfe and choreographed by Camille A. Brown. The show first opened on Broadway in 1959 and was inspired by the memoirs of Gypsy Rose Lee, a burlesque performer reflecting on her relationship with her mother.
The show is scheduled to open at Broadway's Majestic Theatre, which has long been the home of The Phantom of the Opera. Previews will begin on November 21, with the grand opening on December 19.
Woods and Tyson come to the musical from their starring roles in The notebook, in which they play the middle and younger versions of Allie. Tyson made her Broadway debut in the role, while Woods made her debut as Catherine Parr in Six: The Musical and recently appeared in the Off-Broadway productions of The Little Shop of Horrors AND I can get it for you in bulk.
Burstein appeared in 19 Broadway shows and received a Tony Award for his portrayal of Harold Zidler in Moulin Rouge.
Margherita won the Laurence Olivier Award for her West End debut in Zorro The Musical and originated the roles of Mrs. Wormwood in Matilda the musical. Thomas played Mama Morton in Chicago on Broadway. Hull appeared on Broadway in the revival of 42nd Street, Sweet Charity, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and more recently in Mr. Saturday Night.
