Lily James and Pierce Brosnan are ready to rock with their reboot Cliffhanger.
Principal photography has begun in Austria for an updated version of the 1993 film of the same name starring Sylvester Stallone. Jaume Collet-Serra directs the new film that is planning a theatrical release and comes from Rocket Science, in collaboration with Thank You Pictures and Supernix.
THE Cliffhanger The reboot centers on mountaineer Ray Cooper (Brosnan), who runs a chalet with his daughter in the Dolomites, a mountain range in Italy. When the couple is kidnapped, eldest daughter Naomi (James), still dealing with the trauma of a previous climbing accident, must overcome her past to save her family.
Stallone was announced last year as the star of the reboot, but has since left the project, director Ric Roman Waugh previously announced.
Completing the cast are Nell Tiger Free, Franz Rogowski, Shubham Saraf, Assaad Bouab, Suzy Bemba and Bruno Gouery. The project is based on a story by Ana Lily Amirpour.
“Shooting our film about the Dolomites using large format cameras was critical for us to show the scale and scope of the story we are telling,” Collet-Serra said in a statement. “We will offer audiences a truly emotional and visceral theatrical experience. Lily in particular went above and beyond for the role, really training and learning to climb. His dedication has allowed us to capture some incredible shots that we couldn't have gotten otherwise, and the entire crew is blown away by his commitment.”
Producers include Lars Sylvest for Thank You Pictures, Joe Neurauter for Supernix and Thorsten Schumacher for Rocket Science, along with Neal Moritz and Toby Jaffe.
The original Cliffhanger was released in theaters in May 1993 by TriStar Pictures and grossed $255 million at the worldwide box office. Stallone starred for director Renny Harlin as a mountain climber enlisted to help track down suitcases full of stolen money in the Rocky Mountains.
James is represented by UTA and Tavistock Wood. Brosnan is repped by CAA, Viewpoint and Hansen Jacobson. Collet-Serra of LBI Entertainment and Yorn Levine.
