Matthew Lillard has a big reason why he turned down the opportunity to compete Dancing with the stars.
The actor recently opened up Company interior about his difficulties at the beginning of his career, particularly after 2004 Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed bombed at the box office, much to his surprise.
“I thought I was going to be No. 1 on the movie list for the next 10 years,” Lillard said of the Scooby-Doo sequel, which saw him play Shaggy. “And the reality is that the exact opposite happened.”
As a result, Lillard was forced to reevaluate his career, and that's when his team at the time approached him about joining the ABC dance competition series. However, the actor was not keen on the idea.
“I was going to do it Dancing with the stars. And I thought, if I do this Dancing with the starsI will never win an Academy Award,” Lillard said. “If I do Dancing with the starsI'm going to be famous and not a great actor, and I just wanted to be a great actor.

Even before Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed failed, Lillard admitted that he got “caught up in the success of what I was doing.” He often found himself reading reviews and stopping by theaters, hoping to be recognized.
“I was caught up in the parts I was getting, I was caught up in this desire to be famous, quote unquote,” he recalled. “I've been through good times and bad times. I was irrelevant and thought I would never work again.
While Lillard's early career didn't necessarily go as planned, he eventually found his groove, going on to voice the character of Shaggy time and time again. Scooby-Doo movies, shows and video games. He has also starred in dozens of projects throughout his career, including those in 2023 Five Nights at Freddy's, and is set to return for the sequel.
She added: “I have been through all aspects of the career and I love where I am at this very moment.”
