Michael Che and Colin Jost are used to exchanging barbs Saturday night live“Weekend Update” by, but there's one line that previously left Che “frustrated.”
During a recent interview on Fly on the Wall with Dana Carvey and David Spade podcast, the two SNL Cast members were asked if they had ever said to each other after the NBC sketch comedy news broadcast, “If you do that again, I'll kick your butt.”
“Yeah, I think you were pretty mad about the jalapeño thing,” Che replied, to which Jost joked, “You were just mad because it worked so well.”
During the Season 40 finale, which aired in May 2015, the two comedians revived a joke that had been cut from a previous episode. “Ohio police arrested a woman who allegedly stabbed her boyfriend because he ate all their salsa,” Jost said at the time. “Although you’d be mad if your boyfriend was a jalapeño business.”
“I remember when you did it in rehearsal, because I had never heard it before. I don't remember what the setup was, but the punchline was 'jalapeño business,'” Che said. “And I was like, 'If you tell that joke on air, I'm out. I'm leaving the show.' And he did it on air and it was the bomb. And I was so frustrated. I was so frustrated. I was like, 'I don't even know what we do anymore.'”
Jost added, “Honestly, I would have cut it if it hadn't upset you so much. And then I thought, 'I'm definitely going to do this, for sure.'”
Che and Jost have appeared as co-hosts of “Weekend Update” since the season 40 premiere, making them the longest-running hosts of the segment ever. And they're set to return for SNLthe 50th season, which will debut September 28 on NBC and Peacock.
