Author distribution Mubi has signed a multi-territorial agreement for Luca Guadagnino's film starring Daniel Craig Queer.
The deal, announced on Friday, will see Mubi take all rights Queer in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, Latin America, Germany, Austria, Benelux, Spain, Turkey and India and all rights, excluding film rights, in Italy. A24 has the film for the US
Queer it premiered at the Venice Film Festival and had its North American premiere in Toronto last month.
Daniel Craig stars alongside Drew Starkey, Lesley Manville and Jason Schwartzman in the film, based on Burroughs' autobiographical novel set in the 1950s. The former 007 star plays William Lee, an American expatriate and heroin addict in Mexico City, who spends his days almost entirely alone, except for some contact with other members of the small American community. His meeting with Eugene Allerton, an ex-pat soldier, played by Starkey, makes him believe that it might finally be possible to make an intimate connection with someone.
Queer was produced by Guadagnino for his Frenesy Film Company and Lorenzo Mieli for the Fremantle-owned The Apartment group together with Fremantle and Fremantle North America in collaboration with Cinecittà and Frame by Frame. Fremantle financed the film. The Veterans, who handle worldwide sales of the title, brokered the deal with Mubi.
Mubi recently opened its American theatrical slate with the release of Coralie Fargeat The substance. Other recent acquisitions include that of Andrea Arnold BirdMagnus von Horn The girl with the needleand that of Levan Akin Crossing.
