Netflix's data dump theme song for the first half of 2024 could very well be “Rule, Britannia.”
Four UK-made series topped the streamer's domestic chart from January to June, led by Fool Me Once with 107.5 million views worldwide over those six months. The third season of Bridgerton Bridge (91.9 million views), Baby Reindeer (87.6 million) and The gentlemen (75.9 million) complete the top four positions.
In total, Netflix’s 280 million subscribers watched 94 billion hours of programming on the service in the first half of the year, up from about 90 billion hours in the second half of 2023. Netflix’s first engagement report, covering the first half of 2023, covered about 100 billion hours of viewing.
As in the last report, the list of top series highlights Netflix's global reach. In addition to the four British series at the top of the list, the top 10 also includes the live-action series Avatar: The Last Airbender (71.1 million views), Griselda (69.2 million), American Nightmare (55 million), 3 Body problem (52.4 million), The paper house spin off Berlin (48.5 million) and One day (39.4 million).
(“Views” here, and across the streaming landscape, are calculated by dividing a title's total viewing time by its runtime. For example, the 107.5 million views for Fool me once (equivalent to 689.5 million hours of viewing.)
As for the cinema, the thriller with Millie Bobby Brown Bridesmaid was the most viewed title, series or film, of the first half of the year with 143.8 million views (equivalent to 263.7 million hours watched). Kevin Hart's Lift up (129.4 million views) and the Oscar nominee Snow Society (103.8 million) has garnered more than 100 million views.
