Norway has entered the 2025 Oscar race, selecting Halfdan Ullmann's school drama Tondel Armando as a candidate for next year's Academy Awards in the Best Foreign Language Film category.
Renate Reinsve, the emerging star of Joachim Trier's twice Oscar-nominated film The worst person in the worldplays the lead role in Armandothat is, Elisabeth, a local celebrity who finds herself embroiled in an elementary school drama when her son Armand is accused of sexual abuse by a classmate.
Armando premiered in the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes, where it won the Camera d'Or for Best First Film. The film also received the award for Best Sound, the Prix de la Meilleure Création Sonere for sound designer Mats Lid Støten and composer Ella van der Woude.
IFC Films has acquired the film for the United States and will distribute it. Armando a qualifying stage for awards later this year.
Norway has received six Oscar nominations for best foreign language film, but has yet to win the trophy.
The 96th Academy Awards nominations deadline is November 14, 2024. The shortlist for Best International Feature Film will be announced on December 17. Nominations will be announced on January 17, 2025. The 2025 Academy Awards will be held on Sunday, March 2.
