A note from Scott: As hard as it may be to believe, another awards season is upon us! It kicked off unofficially, as it always does, with the Venice and Telluride film festivals over Labor Day weekend. I was on site at the latter, where I saw and analyzed a ton of films; I interviewed the people behind three of the most talked about, The Apprentice, Mary AND Emilia Perez; and I analyzed its meaning with my colleague Rebecca Keegan. Now, the awards industrial complex has fled stifling Los Angeles and migrated north to Toronto. I'll be here next week to screen films, analyze their prospects, and, on Sunday, moderate TIFF Visionaries chats with Alfonso Cuarón (whose new Apple TV+ limited series Disclaimer screened in Telluride and is screening here) and Malala Yousafzai (an executive producer of the Apple TV+ documentary The Last of the Women of the Sea) — I hope you'll join us!
