A new one Robocop series is becoming more and more of a reality for Amazon Prime Video. The streamer just hired two key producers for the in-development serialized version of the sci-fi action franchise.
The perpetually busy James Wan (Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom) and his Atomic Monster banner will executive produce alongside Michael Clear and Rob Hackett. Fellow executive producer Peter Ocko (Lodge 49, The Office) has also come aboard the project and will serve as writer and showrunner. The series will be produced in-house by Amazon MGM Studios.
A look at the synopsis reveals that a TV series is Robocop won't stray too far from the source material. “A giant tech conglomerate partners with the local police department to introduce a technologically advanced officer to combat rising crime, a police officer who is part man, part machine,” it reads.
The original from 1987 Robocopdirected by Paul Verhoeven, was a disturbingly prescient sci-fi drama in which a giant corporation infiltrates an urban police force by transforming a mortally wounded officer into a cyborg cop. The film was set in an unflattering dystopian Detroit, but given the long leashes on both corporate behemoths and law enforcement in America, this reboot could easily be set in the present day or pretty much anywhere.
Robocop It has previously inspired two sequels, a 2014 film reboot, and four short-lived TV series, most of them aimed at children.
Robocop It's one of many, many film and TV titles that Amazon inherited when it closed its $8.5 billion acquisition of MGM in 2022. Other big names include The Silence of the LambsTHE James Bond franchising, The Handmaid's Tale AND Legally BlondeThe latter is on track to get its own prequel series on the streamer, original star Reese Witherspoon revealed on stage at the Amazon Upfront in early 2024.
As for the Robocop creatives, Ocko is repped by Jackoway Austen Tyerman and Management. Wan is repped by CAA, Stacey Testro International and Myman Greenspan Fox.
