Switzerland Picks Peruvian Drama Reinas for Oscar Race

Switzerland has chosen Queensa Peruvian family drama by Swiss-Peruvian director Klaudia Reynicke, as a 2025 Oscar nominee in the Best International Feature Film category.

The film is set in Lima in 1992, during a summer in which a father tries to reconnect with his two daughters against the backdrop of a country in crisis and political turmoil.

Gonzalo Molina plays the father Carlos, a failed taxi driver and actor. Abril Gjurinovic and Luana Vega are his long-suffering daughters, Lucia and Aurora. During what they know will be their last summer together, Carlos struggles to rebuild his family bonds while around them, the country's economy collapses, victim of hyperinflation.

Queens It premiered at Sundance and screened at the Berlin Film Festival, where it won the Grand Prize for Best Film from the international jury Generation Kplus.

Switzerland has received a total of five nominations for Best International Feature Film and has won the Oscar twice. Peru has so far received only one Oscar nomination, for Claudia Llosa. The Milk of Pain in 2009.

The shortlist for Best International Feature Film will be announced on December 17, with nominees announced on January 17, 2025. The 2025 Academy Awards will be held on Sunday, March 2.
