Taylor Swift Endorses Kamala Harris After Debate

Pop superstar Taylor Swift took to Instagram Tuesday night to endorse Vice President Kamala Harris’s presidential bid, potentially enticing her army of Swifties to head to the polls in November.

“Like many of you, I watched the debate tonight,” he wrote in a lengthy post. “If you haven’t already, this is a great time to do some research on the issues at hand and where these candidates stand on the topics that matter to you. As a voter, I make sure to watch and read everything I can about their policy proposals and plans for this country.”

“I recently learned that an AI of 'me' falsely endorsing Donald Trump's presidential run was posted on her website. It really invoked my fears about AI and the dangers of spreading misinformation. It led me to the conclusion that I need to be very transparent about my actual plans for this election as a voter. The easiest way to combat misinformation is with the truth,” she continued. “I will be casting my vote for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz in the 2024 presidential election. I will be voting for @kamalaharris because she is fighting for rights and causes that I believe need a warrior to champion. I think she is a steadfast and gifted leader and I believe we can accomplish so much more in this country if we lead by calm and not chaos. I was so encouraged and impressed by her choice of running mate @timwalz, who has been fighting for LGBTQ+ rights, IVF, and a woman's right to her own body for decades.”

Swift concluded, “I did my research and I made my choice. Your research is yours and your choice is yours. I also want to say, especially to first-time voters, remember that you must be registered to vote! I also find it much easier to vote early. I will link to where you can register and find early voting dates and information in my story. Love and hope, Taylor Swift Childless Cat Lady.”

Swift was known for staying firmly away from politics early in her career, long before she veered into pop songs and was catapulted into her current uncharted territory of mega-fame. After two years of the Trump administration, Swift has decided to make her politics known. In an Instagram post, Swift endorsed Democratic candidates Phil Bredesen and Jim Cooper in the 2018 U.S. midterm elections in her home state of Tennessee. In 2020, she endorsed Joe Biden for president.

Before the DNC, there was much speculation about whether Swift would publicly endorse Harris, with only President Barack Obama’s official nod to Harris’s campaign receiving more attention. A MoveOn.org petition sought signatures to force both Swift and pop superstar Beyoncé to endorse Harris.

Beyoncé, for her part, was quick to lend Harris' campaign her theme song. After two days of Harris' campaign, the pop star approved the use of her 2016 track “Freedom,” from her hit album LemonadeNot only is the song a Harris selection to play at his events, it also plays a central role in his first commercial.

While Swift's presence at the DNC is sure to cause a stir among the public and her most devoted fans, it's unclear whether she will be involved in any way with her presidential bid ahead of Election Day.
