Special effects The bear scored notable wins at the 2024 Emmys, even making history and setting a new record.
Ahead of the ceremony, the FX series, starring Jeremy Allen White, Ayo Edebiri and Ebon Moss-Bachrach, set a new record for nominations in a single year in the comedy category with 23 nominations. The record was previously held by 30 Rock with 22 nominations in 2009.
The series, created by Christopher Storer, was the second most nominated series at the Emmys this year, with nominations for Outstanding Comedy Series, Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series, Outstanding Casting and Outstanding Guest Actor for Jon Bernthal, Bob Odenkirk and Will Poulter, and for Olivia Colman and Jamie Lee Curtis for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series.
With its wins so far this awards season, the series has set a new record for most wins in a single season for a comedy: 11, surpassing its own tally from last year, when it won 10.
For Sunday night's show, Moss-Bachrach won for supporting actor in a comedy series, his second award in the category for the show. Meanwhile, White also won the Emmy for actor in a comedy series.
“This show [The Bear] changed my life; it instilled in me the faith that change is possible…you are never truly alone,” White said when accepting the award.
Liza Colón-Zayas won her first Emmy for Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series, making history by becoming the first Latina to win in the category. When she accepted the award, she admitted that she didn't write a speech because she didn't think it would be “possible” to win given that she was “in the presence” of fellow nominees Meryl Streep, Sheryl Lee Ralph, and Carol Burnett.
“And to all the Latinas watching me, keep believing and vote. Vote for your rights,” she concluded her speech.
Christopher Storer took home the Emmy for Outstanding Directing for the episode “Fishes.”
Meanwhile, both Bernthal and Curtis won Emmys in their respective categories at last weekend's Creative Arts Emmys.
“I've helped people help people, and I think that's really the strength of The bear“, Curtis said in his acceptance speech. “Being the source of someone's pain is really hard, and yet to see these groups of people come together and work things out is amazing to me at this point in my life.” Bernthal was not present to accept the award.
In their opening monologue, hosts Dan and Eugene Levy poked fun at the ongoing debate that has followed the series as to whether it is actually a comedy series.
“I love the show and I know some of us might expect us to make a joke about it. The Bear is really a comedy but in the true spirit of The bear“We won't make jokes,” he said as Edebiri laughed and visibly approved the joke.
The FX series recently premiered its third season; Hulu announced that the third season had its highest viewership ever, with 5.4 million views worldwide in its first four days (airing June 27).
The Emmys aired live from the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on ABC. Hosted by Eugene and Dan Levy.
