Former Yves Saint Laurent designer Stefano Pilati is finally launching ready-to-wear under his own name with his new Zara capsule — and tomorrow is the big launch day.

Launching in stores and online on October 3, the long-awaited Stefano Pilati x Zara collection ($17.90 to $699) includes women's, men's and accessories apparel ranging from $17.90 for striped socks to $399 for a black leather jacket finished with oversized metal eyelets. Other standouts include an embellished sheer halterneck dress designed to pair with slacks and other bottoms underneath, a deep-V jumpsuit, relaxed-fit blazer and tuxedo pants, leather pants and skirts, and over-the-knee lace-up boots and faux fur coats. (Some men's pieces have already arrived on the brand's website.)

It's not all business: Zara's latest designer collaboration has a playful twist with strawberry and banana-print silk blouses and pants, button-downs and ruffle tops, mesh tanks and long-sleeve shirts, jackets finished with oversized eyelets , rainbow-striped pants and a frayed-edge jacket with a dramatic collar.

Of his design philosophy, Pilati recently explained on Instagram: “I have always treated fashion as a medium capable of being expressed, used and part of sociological, sometimes political and decidedly philosophical issues. There is no need to say anything per se: symbolizing through drawing and “gestures” can be powerful. Adding nonconformity to my creations allowed me to escape the cliché of bourgeois luxury.

These style codes are visible in his Zara collection through blazers and suit trousers in voluptuous silhouettes, traditional striped button-down shirts with rounded collars, and pieces with checkered or houndstooth accents (or both); and in the lookbook, where mesh pieces are layered under classic cardigans and '60s- and '80s-inspired sunglasses and chunky earrings are paired together.

Pilati's Zara garments come to life in black and white through a campaign shot by the iconic photographer Steven Meisel and interpreted by Gisele Bundchen together with the designer himself.

After making his name at Armani, Prada and Miu Miu, the Italian designer led YSL from 2004 to 2012 before moving on to Ermenegildo Zegna to lead the brand's couture collections and Agnona womenswear line. He launched his own unisex label, Random Identities, in 2017, and most recently designed a capsule collection for Fendi in 2023.
