International broadcasters are at capacity Maxima. The Dutch royal drama series continues its global rollout, with sales company Beta Film closing deals in 50 territories, including Australian public broadcaster SBS.
The drama, which premiered at the Canneseries TV festival earlier this year, is Dutch in style The crowna dramatization of real-life events surrounding the Dutch royal family. Adapted from Marcia Luyten's 2022 novel Máxima Zorreguieta: Homelandthe series revolves around the love story between the Argentinian Máxima Zorreguieta and Willem-Alexander, the future king of the Netherlands. Zorreguieta, of course, would marry Willem-Alexander to become Queen Máxima.
Beta has sold the first season of 6 episodes of Maxima across Scandinavia, with agreements with TV2 in Denmark, TV4 in Sweden, Finnish MTV, with the YES network for Israel, and has entered into a multi-territorial agreement with the FOX network for the Central European region.
Maxima it premiered on Dutch streamer RTL Videoland and was a ratings success in Italy on public broadcaster Rai and in Spain on Atresmedia. In Latin America, it was a top 10 program on HBO Max.
Filming for the show's second season will begin this year in the Netherlands, Belgium, Spain and Austria. The plot follows Máxima from her wedding preparations to her coronation ten years later, when Willem-Alexander becomes king, following the abdication of her mother, Queen Beatrix. Along the way, she struggles between family dynamics at court and her career ambitions. Saskia Diesing and Joosje Duk return to direct the second season from screenplays by Rifka Lodeizen and Daan Gielis.
Beta will purchase both seasons Maxima to international buyers at the Mipcom Cannes global television trade show later this month.
