Rupert Everett looks back on how his friendship with Madonna was strained because of it The next best thing flop of the film.
THE My best friend's wedding the actor recently appeared on How to Fail with Elizabeth Day podcast, where he reflected on the 2000 romantic comedy directed by John Schlesinger, starring Everett, Madonna and Benjamin Bratt.
“It wasn't really a box office failure because of the video sales in those days – Madonna sold a lot of videos – but the film itself didn't work, even though for a long time it was the only film that dealt with this theme which was actually happening and being born then,” he explained.
The next best thing follows Abbie (Madonna) who has a one-night stand with her gay friend Robert (Everett) and they decide to raise the resulting child together. But things get complicated when Abbie starts dating Ben (Bratt).
According to Everett, “everything went wrong” on set during filming, who said, “I completely ran out of things for myself in Hollywood.” However, he still praises Madonna for her performance in the film, despite the constant pressure she faced at the time.
“I think it's very difficult for her to act in movies because everyone has these preconceptions,” she said.
“I don't know how she could ever be good enough for people to say, 'Oh God, this is really good.'”
The happy prince The actor continued: “I think it was great to have her in the movie. I think she was touching in the movie too. I haven't seen it in ages, though. I mean, every time it happens, I look the other way.
As there were high expectations for the film's success, it ultimately failed, Everett said it put a strain on his relationship with the “Material Girl” singer. He added: “Friendships and failures in Hollywood are very difficult things to carry on.”
