The nine Australians buy all the English versions of Married at First Sight

9Network is ready to get married.

The Australian broadcaster has signed a new deal with sales group Seven.One Studios International to acquire all seasons of every English-language version of the reality format Married at First Sightpledging to acquire all past and future episodes of the US, UK, New Zealand and South African versions. The show, whose American version is now in its eighteenth season on Lifetime, follows singles who agree to get married on their first date.

In conjunction with the new agreement, 9Network has launched a Married at First Sight FAST channel on its streaming platform, 9Now.

Married at First Sight in Australiain its eleventh season in Australia, it was a ratings phenomenon for 9Network, topping the Australian charts, reaching more than 2 million viewers. The show beat the big hit reality shows Survived Australia AND Australian Idol.

The Australian deal is emblematic of a broader trend in the international television market, as traditional broadcasters, facing declining audiences and falling advertising revenues, rely more on low-budget reality and non-fiction formats than more drama series expensive.

Married at First Sight has proven to be a reliable ratings winner since its launch ten years ago. Originally created and produced by Steven.One's Danish subsidiary, Snowman Productions, for Danish public broadcaster DR in 2014, the show has been successfully exported around the world. Seven.One Studios International has sold recorded versions of the show to more than 130 countries, and there are currently more than 30 commissions for localized versions.
