The sequel to “Who's the Boss” will not be released on Amazon

A couple of IP-based projects at Amazon are not moving forward after several years of development.

The tech giant's Freevee streaming service scuppered a sequel to the '80s sitcom Who is the boss?who had original series stars Tony Danza and Alyssa Milano attached to reprise their roles. Amazon MGM Studios, meanwhile, has pulled the plug on Bosch spinoff centered on Jamie Hector's character, Detective Jerry Edgar.

THE Who is the boss? The sequel found a home at Freevee in 2022 after two years of development at Sony Pictures Television, which owns the rights to the original series. Milano was supposed to play Samantha Micelli, now a single mother living in the same house she grew up in on the original show, which aired from 1984 to 1992 on ABC. Danza would also return as her now retired father.

Mike Royce and Brigitte Muñoz-Liebowitz (Netflix and Pop TV One day at a time) came on board as writers and executive producers when the show came to Freevee. The late Norman Lear, whose Embassy Communications produced the original, was also among the executive producers.

With regard to Boschthe Jerry Edgar show was one of two spinoffs announced by Amazon MGM in development early last year. The other, centered on detective Renée Ballard, landed a series order in November 2023; Maggie Q plays the title character, the head of a new LAPD cold case unit, also starring John Carroll Lynch. Michael Connelly, author of the Harry Bosch novels on which all the shows are based, was supposed to executive produce Edgar's show with Laurence Andries and Fabel Entertainment's Henrik Bastin and Melissa Aouate.
