Tom Hanks is happy to leave Forrest Gump just the way it is.
The Oscar winner, who found his again Forrest Gump co-star Robin Wright and director Robert Zemeckis for their new film Hererecently said The New York Times who is grateful that a sequel to the 1994 film was never made.
“It's this extraordinary amalgam that stands on its own and never needs to be repeated,” he said of the film. “And thank God we never bothered to try to make another one. Why put a hat on a hat?”
Forrest Gumpwhich featured Hanks playing the lead character, was based on the 1986 novel by the late author Winston Groom. The film follows the life of Forrest Gump, an Alabama man with an IQ of 75 who longs to be reunited with his childhood sweetheart, and his experiences from the 1950s to the 1970s.
Although a sequel was never adapted for the big screen, Groom released a sequel in 1995, Gump & Co.following the success of Forrest Gump.
Hanks said on Happy Sad Confused podcast in 2022 that “tried to talk about another Forrest Gump”, however, “it lasted a total of 40 minutes”. He added: “And then we never… said, 'Guys, let's go.'”
Elsewhere in his interview with the TimesTHE City of asteroids the actor added that he enjoys seeing how special the film still is to people.
“I still get letters all the time saying: every year the family gets together, let's do what we did in 1995 when it first came out on home video. We all watch it, from start to finish,” he said. “Right now, somewhere in the world, someone is watching that movie from start to finish. And it comes with the same sense of comfort and familiarity.
