Warner Bros. Discovery is expanding its board of directors.
The entertainment company said Daniel Sanchez will join its board of directors, effective Oct. 1. Sanchez is no stranger to Discovery shareholders, having previously served on Discovery’s board prior to the 2022 WarnerMedia merger that created the current company.
He is also the nephew of fellow WBD board member and shareholder John Malone and currently serves on the boards of Malone’s Liberty Global Ltd. and also Liberty Latin America Ltd. Prior to retiring in 2021, Sanchez worked as an attorney, focusing primarily on tax law and tax planning.
Malone is a majority shareholder in several media-related companies, including the Liberty Companies (which owns SiriusXM, Formula 1, the Atlanta Braves and other properties) and Charter Communications. He is also a mentor to WBD CEO David Zaslav.
In a statement, WBD said Sanchez's legal expertise will help him “assist the Board in developing strategies that take into account a broad range of issues arising from the application and evolution of tax laws and regulations.”
“Dan’s legal background, corporate experience and outstanding service on the board of Discovery, Inc. make him a positive addition to the WBD board,” said Samuel A. Di Piazza, Jr., chairman of the WBD board, in a statement. “The company and the industry are in a period of exceptional change, and with that comes exceptional opportunity. Dan will be an important voice as the board advises on growth plans, evolving consumer preferences and strategic initiatives.”
