For context, the next big movie starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo is the first in a two-part film adaptation of the long-running, Tony Award-winning Broadway musical of the same name. The stage musical Evilfirst presented in 2003 with Kristin Chenoweth as Galinda and Idina Menzel as Elphaba, it is based on the book by American writer Gregory Maguire Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West.
To add further mental acrobatics, Maguire's 1995 novel was itself based on L. Frank Baum's 1900 novel entitled The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and its 1939 film adaptation The Wizard of Oz starring Judy Garland.
In front of the Evil To coincide with the film’s premiere, Maguire’s bestselling novel will be republished in a collector’s edition, available for pre-order and on sale at Target for $28 (original price $40) if purchased online before the official September 24 release date.
