Political leaders around the world, including Israel, Ukraine, the United Kingdom, France and Italy, have begun congratulating President-elect Donald Trump on his election victory.
The Republican and former reality TV star emerged victorious Tuesday, beating Vice President Kamala Harris by 270 electoral votes to return to the Oval Office. It marks a historic comeback and a blow to Democrats as their opponents won Wisconsin and earned Trump a second non-consecutive term.
On Wednesday morning, as the rest of the world woke up to the news, world leaders began offering their messages of congratulations to Trump. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy wrote on Elon Musk's X: “I appreciate President Trump's commitment to the 'peace through strength' approach in global affairs. This is exactly the principle that can practically bring just peace in Ukraine closer.”
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Trump had made “the greatest comeback in history.” He also said on X: “Your historic return to the White House offers a new beginning for America and a strong commitment to the great alliance between Israel and America. This is a huge win!”
In the United Kingdom, Prime Minister and Labor Party leader Keir Starmer – who has been outspoken against Trump in past years – sent a message to the president-elect before the result was even officially announced. “Congratulations to President-elect Trump on your historic election victory,” Starmer wrote on X. “I look forward to working with you in the years to come. As our closest allies, we stand shoulder to shoulder in defense of our shared values of freedom, democracy and enterprise.”
Emmanuel Macron, the president of France, said he was “ready to work” with Trump. “Ready to work together just as we have been able to do for four years,” he said. “With your beliefs and mine. With respect and ambition. For more peace and prosperity.”
Right-wing Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni offered her congratulations, saying Italy and the United States have “an unshakable alliance.” And she continues: “It is a strategic bond, which I am sure that we will now further strengthen.”
German Olaf Scholz wrote a similar message to his European counterparts. “I congratulate @realDonaldTrump on his election as President of the United States. For a long time, Germany and the United States have worked together successfully promoting prosperity and freedom on both sides of the Atlantic. We will continue to do so for the well-being of our citizens.”
European Union President Ursula Von Der Leyen “warmly” congratulated Trump. “Let us work together on a transatlantic partnership that continues to deliver results for our citizens,” he said, adding: “Millions of jobs and billions in trade and investment on each side of the Atlantic depend on the dynamism and stability of our relationship economical. “
